Pug Life

What better way to get back into the creative flow than being asked to create one of my favourite breeds of dog, the pug! PrettySkitty has been very quiet over the last year, life invariably plays havoc with your creativity sometimes! However, im back in body and in mind and im super keen to share these latest makes with you.

First up is Monty, a gorgeous little fella bursting with puggish personality!

Monty, like all my creations starts off as wire, moulded and twisted into a shape that resembles a body…….

Once some form of structure has been I then start to wrap core sheep’s wool around the wire, building up gradually until it starts to resemble the thing youre creating! It is a very long process and can take weeks or months, depending on the craziness of my household!

Next up is Maggie, almost as cute as she is in real life! The ultimate cuddle monster, she was an absolute pleasure to make, although her colouring was very tricky and most unusual for a pug!

Fur Planting….

Fur planting is a technique ive been learning and although it takes much longer to apply, I think the results make for a more realistic coat.

Firstly I cut about 20 clumps of wool at a time, each about an inch in length and lay them out on my mat. Taking a small section I place it on the body. Gradually working from the bottom of the body, each section is then layered on top of the previous one.

To fix into place I stab a thin line across the middle, I then fold the top over and stab in the same manner, this secures the wool to the body before it can be cut to the desired length.

If the coat im working on is curly, I follow the above process but instead of cutting the length, I twist it in a circular motion with the needle before stabbing to secure.

It sounds complicated because it is a bit! Practice and a whole lot of patience makes for a better result ive found!
