Fur planting is a technique ive been learning and although it takes much longer to apply, I think the results make for a more realistic coat.

Firstly I cut about 20 clumps of wool at a time, each about an inch in length and lay them out on my mat. Taking a small section I place it on the body. Gradually working from the bottom of the body, each section is then layered on top of the previous one.
To fix into place I stab a thin line across the middle, I then fold the top over and stab in the same manner, this secures the wool to the body before it can be cut to the desired length.
If the coat im working on is curly, I follow the above process but instead of cutting the length, I twist it in a circular motion with the needle before stabbing to secure.
It sounds complicated because it is a bit! Practice and a whole lot of patience makes for a better result ive found!
